Let's load a data set

From URL

URL: File type:
If you do not specify the file type, then VOStat will try to guess it from the extension of the file name at the end of the URL.
  • .dat or .txt: space/tab separated ASCII format.
  • .csv: comma separated ASCII format.
  • .fits: FITS format (just table, no image).
  • .vot: VO table format
If you are using a URL that does not have such an extension (e.g., a query URL) then you will need to choose the file type explicitly.

For ASCII tables, please ensure that the first line of text contains the variable names. Variable names must not have embedded space in them, unless the names are enclosed in quotes.

A good dataset to practice VOStat functionality is a table of 20 properties of 113 globular clusters in the Milky Way Galaxy. Click here to work this data set.

From local file

File: (You may try drag-n-drop, too, if your browser permits.)

File type:

If you do not specify the file type, then VOStat will try to guess it from the extension of your file.
  • .dat or .txt: space/tab separated ASCII format.
  • .csv: comma separated ASCII format. (If you have data in MSExcel format, please save it as a csv file before loading it into VOStat.)
  • .fits: FITS format (just table, no image).
  • .vot: VO table format

For ASCII tables, please ensure that the first line of text contains the variable names. Variable names must not have embedded space in them, unless the names are enclosed in quotes.

From SAMP

Current SAMP status:
SAMP communication requires a signed java applet. When you use this feature for the first time your browser may pop up a window asking for your permission. You have to allow the applet to run to establish SAMP communication.
  • A red dot means VOStat is not connected to SAMP. Clicking on the dot will coonect VOStat to a hub (if one is found running).
  • A static green dot means VOStat is ready to receive data.
  • A throbbing green dot means the data set is being uploaded.
  • A throbbing R icon means the data set has been already uploaded to the server, and now is being read into R. This may take some time.
In order to load data into VOStat by SAMP you must have some SAMP-aware VO tool (like Topcat) running in your machine. Any data set broadcast from your local VO tool automatically goes inside VOStat.
