Summer School in Statistics for Astronomers XV (June 3 - 7, 2019)

Penn State's Center for Astrostatistics is continuing its annual Summer Schools in Statistics for astronomers designed for graduate students and researchers in astronomy. Lectures and tutorials are presented by a team of experienced professors in statistics, astronomy, computer science, and informatics. Classroom instruction is interspersed with hands-on analysis of astronomical data with opportunity for discussion of methodological issues.
The topics include:

  • Principles of probability and inference
  • Regression
  • Model selection & validation
  • Maximum likelihood methods
  • Non-parametric methods
  • Multivariate methods
  • Clustering and classification
  • MCMC
  • Bayesian inference
  • Spatial statistics
  • Time series

The 2019 summer school in statistics for astronomers will be modeled on annual Penn State summer schools since 2005, and the three Indian Institute of Astrophysics-Penn State summer schools.


Summer School Registration Deadline: May 10, 2019 or earlier if the enrollment limit is reached.

The 2017 summer school will be held on the Pennsylvania State University's University Park Campus located in State College, Pennsylvania, USA. The town of State College and the university campus combine to offer a relaxed, college town atmosphere with many shops, restaurants and points of interest.
